Postgraduate Certificate of Learning and Teaching (PGCLT)

The University of Chichester

PhD: ‘Experiencing Comics: A Multisensory Approach to the Comic Strip and Related Forms’;

The University of Chichester (accredited by the University of Southampton)

Supervised by Dr Hugo Frey and Prof. Keith Jenkins.

Synopsis: We tend to think of comics as a visual medium, a means by which stories are told using a sequential arrangement of words and images. My thesis challenges that idea, demonstrating that the medium frequently employs a number of the senses in concert in order to express meaning that is deeper and more complex than could be expressed through sight alone.

Funding: Bursary of £12,000 per year for three years awarded by the University of Chichester. Additional funds awarded by the University of Chichester for attendance of conferences in Copenhagen, Madrid and Manchester.
